Leeward Flame Wing


Based out of Whiterock Weyr, Leeward Flame is primarily a relief wing. Threadfall is a long battle, and few dragons can keep up their strength for its duration. With so many anxious to leap to flight at first chance to sear Thread from the sky, other dragons need to be ready to pick up the slack when they tire - or worse, when they pass Between forever. This is Leeward Flame's purpose.

Comprised primarily of blues and greens, Leeward Flame still looks to a brown or bronze dragonrider to lead the wing in Threadfall. While it is possible for a gold to claim membership in Leeward Flame, they rarely fly; if they do, it is only at the lowest level to help ensure their livelihood. Though most of the glory goes to the early risers of the dragons, it is their relief flight that often faces the most dangerous work, weaving in and out of tiring dragons whose aim and concentration have both begun to falter due to battle stress and fatigue. Being the garbageman is a thankless role. It is also a vital role for the Weyr's survival - and that of Pern.

In spite of it being less prestigious than other wings, candidates for Leeward Flame are considered very carefully. They have to be just as daring as the first wings to fly while engaging Thread. They must also have the patience and pragmatism necessary to stand back and let others fight first .. waiting until the battle has long been underway before stepping in to help. Wing leaders are especially scrutinized. Riding the larger dragons, they are normally expected to last the entire duration of Threadfall. Being in Leeward Flame, however, requires that they must hold back with the rest of their wing until the first dragons begin to falter. Only then can they take flight as well. They are usually the last dragons to return to the Weyr, waiting until well after the last sign of Threadfall has passed before determining that their job is done. It is not unheard of for a brown or bronze dragonrider to leave Leeward Flame after just a short period of time because of comments from other larger dragonriders insinuating that they were not pulling their own weight in Threadfall.

The wing trains regularly and rigorously, focusing on drills that involve abrupt maneuver changes and passing Between in short jumps to mimic the chaotic flight patterns necessary to adapt when meeting other dragons and riders beset by tunnel vision or fatigue. These drills have started to earn the wing something of a name for itself as one full of versatile acrobats.

Leeward Flame's insignia is a black triskelion on a field of grey. It is common for its members to bear the triskelion tattooed somewhere on them, most frequently on the forearm or back of the hand. This is not a required mark to wear for Wing members, and it is perfectly acceptable for riders to decide not have the emblem tattooed.
